Unlike most announcements, the Pokémon Company International’s (TPCi’s) newly announced Masks of Ogerpon Premium Collection was met with general confusion and a level of distaste.
According to promotional product pictures, the Masks of Ogerpon Premium Collection will feature the following:
- Foil cards of Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex and Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex
- An oversized foil card of Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon ex
- 10 Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) Booster Packs
- A code for Pokémon TCG Live
Players' disappointment regarding this product is stemming from the fact that the TPCi hadn't thought to include the other members of the Ogerpon line up such as Teal Mask Ogerpon ex or Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon ex to feature as promo cards in the Masks of Ogerpon Collection.
Over at second-hand online markets like TCGplayer, the going rate for both of the featured Ogerpons are anywhere from less than a dollar to up to $2 on average.
But to the credit of the Twilight Masquerade version of Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex, it has been enjoying a steady increase of value as of late. Copies are starting to have an asking price from anywhere between $12 to $20.
This may be largely in part to some success the Ogerpons had during the recent regional tournament held in Atlanta, GA, last April 12th where some Ogerpon decks made it to the top 100 out a tournament population of over 2000 participants.
That said, there is a much cheaper copy of Ogerpon Wellspring going for about $2 - which is more expensive than the cheapest variants of even the competitively viable Ogerpons. While players may have preferred to see the more competitively viable Ogerpons as promos, it wouldn't have made a financial impact on the product.
Outside of a promotional stamp on the featured Ogerpons, interested collectors for this product may find some luck in the 10 booster packs that are to be included.
There could also be an argument to be made for the oversized Ogerpon Hearthflame Mask but generally speaking a person would not be using this as a reason to get a Premium Collection box.
Some content creators over at YouTube had raised a fair point about the product during their video discussion. How come the Ogerpon’s being featured weren’t given the alternative art treatment?
If TPCi wanted people to buy this product then special alternate art or full illustration art versions of the featured Ogerpons might have had a better chance in positively promoting the product.
We may never know the true answer to this question though.TPCi has always played its cards close to its proverbial chest. For those actually interested in this product, TPCi has announced that it will be available for purchase this coming June 13th.
There's nothing new or desirable about the Masks of Ogerpon collection, which is precisely the problem. Unless you want to collect every single Ogerpon variant, there isn't much of a reason to purchase this.
