The scalper situation with the Pokémon TCG’s latest release has skyrocketed prices across the board. A single booster pack of cards being worth $15 is absolutely ridiculous. For reference, that’s twice the price of the most recent Pokémon TCG release.
Considering how expensive Prismatic Evolutions has become following a supply issue, many Pokémon TCG players may be questioning whether or not it’s worth buying this set at all. While buying TCG cards as a potential return on investment has never been a truly good idea, the possibility of some financial reprieve could help potential Pokémon collectors justify buying into such an expensive set.
Fortunately, there are some signs that the chase cards in this set could be the equivalent of a TCG lottery win. What many players believe will be the most expensive card in Prismatic Evolutions is already selling for more than $1000!
Umbreon EX
Collectors love their Eeveelutions. King among them in the Pokémon TCG world is Umbreon. Evolving Skies is considered the best modern Pokémon TCG set, and the Eeveelutions are a big reason for that. The chase variant of Umbreon from that set, renamed Moonbreon, is worth over $1000. Many players believe that there is a strong potential for the chase variant of Umbreon from this set to be worth its weight in gold as well. There isn’t anything suggesting that this Umbreon will end up being worth the same amount in the long run, but there are active auctions on eBay for preorders of this card that have surpassed the $1000 mark.
This specific auction currently has 49 bids for the chase variant of Umbreon EX in Prismatic Evolutions. At the time of writing, the highest bid is worth $1175. This is already an outrageously expensive price tag, but there is a significant chance that this card will go for even more.
With all of the recent drama surrounding this set, Umbreon EX seems to be a major point of interest for TCG players. At the time of writing, over 2300 people viewed this auction in the last 24 hours.
While almost all the interest in Umbreon is from a collector’s perspective thanks to its community legacy, the card isn’t too shabby for constructed play, either. Being able to take a prize card with no strings attached is a very rare ability, even if the price of discarding all of your Energy is rather steep. Having a high-damage attack that guarantees confusion is also quite strong.
Is This the Only Expensive Card?
While there’s no way to know for sure, there is a good chance that Umbreon EX will not be the only expensive card in Prismatic Evolutions. Other Eeveelutions have received incredible-looking chase variants in this set, and players expect those to be worth a fair bit as well. Just not as much as Umbreon EX.
A lot of question marks are still in the air for Prismatic Evolutions. Right now, supply is incredibly low, and scalpers are flipping everything. This is certainly contributing to price increases across the board. There will likely be future print runs of Prismatic Evolutions. In this case, sealed product from the set could cool off somewhat.
