We’re a few weeks out from the official release of the Mega Evolution expansion for the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG). In preparation for its newest release, the Pokemon Company International (TPCi) will have select retailers host a prerelease event, allowing interested players to have early access to this new expansion alongside some special promotional cards.

According to TPCi’s announcement, the prerelease will start on September 13th. This is when select retailers will be selling special ‘Mega Evolution: Build and Battle Boxes’. These boxes will contain four booster packs from the Mega Evolution expansion set alongside a pre-constructed deck of forty cards.

These pre-constructed decks will include cards from current and previous sets, as well as a unique, foil, promotional card. The promotional cards will be one of four cards from Mega Evolution card set: Meganium, Inteleon, Alakazam, or Lunatone.
Between the four, Meganium may be the card that players may be eyeing the most because it lets players double-up on their Leaf-type energy investments due to its ‘Wild Growth’ ability.
Due to the nature of prerelease formats only using a deck size of forty cards, games held during this celebration will feature the use of only four prize cards instead of the usual six. This is mostly to promote easy entrance to new players of the TCG, as well as allowing more seasoned veterans to interact more with the new cards.
Unfortunately, exact details on which retail stores will be taking part in this event have not been given out. TPCi suggests using their ‘Events Locator’ as we get closer to the prerelease schedule, so interested players will be able to find any nearby participating retailers.
Finalizing their announcement, TPCi has made assurances that those interested in the ‘Build and Battle Boxes’ but are unable to attend the prerelease event will be able to purchase the item once the Mega Evolution expansion officially hits store shelves on the 26th of this month (September).
