Despite our love for the Pokémon TCG, its popularity does not compare to the core series of Nintendo games. These are the backbone of the Pokémon franchise, beloved by millions of people across the world. While it's difficult to get me away from a card game, a new Pokémon video game tends to do the trick for a few months.
As a result of the popularity of the video game series, every other aspect of the Pokémon franchise reflects the contents of the games to some degree. That said, it's rare that we can draw hints from other bits of Pokémon’s IP to divine the future of the video game franchise. That seems to be exactly what’s happening following the reveal of two new Pokémon TCG sets.
Black Bolt and White Flare
Recently, two new dual sets were revealed to be released in Japan on June 13, 2025. Black Bolt and White Flare feature all 156 Unovan (generation 5) Pokémon, so these two sets will focus solely on Kalos. As you may imagine from the names of the sets, Black Bolt and White Flare feature Zekrom and Reshiram, the two legendary Pokémon featured in Pokémon Black and White, the same group of Pokémon being featured in these sets.
While there is no confirmation that a Black and White remake is in the works, fans have expected it as a possibility for quite some time. Considering we have remakes for up to generation four at this point, a remake for generation five would make a lot of sense.
Now, we suddenly have two Pokémon sets focusing on generation five when there’s no accurate indication of why the Pokémon company would suddenly move away from Scarlet and Violet TCG content. As a result, there is a real chance that this announcement is foreshadowing a potential generation five remake on the horizon.
At the time of writing, the next Pokémon game to be released is a successor to the hit Legends Arceus game: Pokémon Legends Z-A. The absence of Pokémon sets advertising this release could also suggest that Legends Z-A is having its release date changed, but that is pure speculation.
In terms of concrete information, we know that two Unova-based Pokémon sets will be released in Japan on June 13. What that means is something only time will tell.
